# Policy Writing

A policy is useful only if people can understand and follow it. Dense legalese satisfies the lawyer and confuses everyone the policy is meant to guide.

## Principles
- **Plain language.** Write for the reader, not the legal reviewer. "Submit expenses within 30 days" beats "Expenses shall be submitted in a timely manner pursuant to…".
- **State the why.** People follow policies they understand. "We require MFA because customer data access is at stake" earns compliance that "MFA is mandatory" doesn't.
- **Cover the common cases.** Most policy questions are about edge cases the happy-path text ignores. Anticipate them.
- **Make it findable.** A policy nobody can locate might as well not exist. One source of truth, searchable.

## Maintain
Policies rot. Review on a cadence; update when the law or practice changes. A stale policy is worse than none — it confidently misleads.
