# Litigation Timeline
Litigation is slow, expensive, and rarely turns on a single dramatic moment. Understanding the arc lets you advise realistically and find off-ramps.
## Phases (US civil, illustrative)
1. **Pre-suit.** Demand letter, last settlement chance, statute-of-limitations check.
2. **Pleading.** Complaint, answer, counterclaims. Defines the scope of the fight.
3. **Discovery.** Document production, depositions, interrogatories. The most expensive phase; where most cases settle.
4. **Pre-trial motions.** Summary judgment — often decisive; many cases end here.
5. **Trial.** The rare outcome; <5% of cases reach it.
6. **Post-trial / appeal.** Judgments get challenged; appeals extend timelines by a year+.
## Realities
- Settlement is the modal outcome. Plan for it; don't be caught unprepared at mediation.
- Cost often dwarfs the principle. A "righteous" suit that costs $500K to recover $100K is a bad business decision.
