# Resource Leveling

A plan that schedules 60 hours of work per person per week is fiction. Resource leveling adjusts the schedule to fit the people you actually have, working the hours they actually work.

## Method
- **Know real capacity.** Subtract meetings, support, PTO, and onboarding from nominal hours. Real build capacity is often 50-60% of "in the office".
- **Resolve contention.** When two tasks need the same scarce skill (your only DBA), sequence them. Parallel contention creates silent queues and delay.
- **Level to a sustainable load.** Brief sprints at 110% are possible; sustained 110% produces burnout, errors, and attrition — which costs far more than the schedule it saved.

## Use
A leveled plan slips less than an optimistic one, because it has slack where reality lands.
